SHEPHERDSTOWN ROTARY CLUB INDUCTS NEW MEMBER
The Rotary Club of Shepherdstown has inducted Austin Slater as a new member.
The induction ceremony was held at the Club's August 24 breakfast meeting at the Bavarian Inn.
The accompanying photo shows Slater, right, with Club President Steve Campbell, left.
Slater retired in 2020 after leading the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative as its President and CEO for 18 years.
He and his wife, Carmen, now reside in Shepherdstown, in a historic home they have recently renovated. They are the proud resource-parents of their son, George Lang, who serves as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army.
Slater remains active professionally as Chairman of the Board of the Community Financial Corporation, the holding company for Community Bank of the Chesapeake, and the Lead Independent Director of both the Corporation and the Bank. The Corporation and the Bank are headquartered in Waldorf, MD.
Locally, he is serving as an adjunct faculty member at Shepherd University’s College of Business, as a member of the board of the Historic Shepherdstown Commission, and as a member of the Corporation of Shepherdstown's Water Board.
Slater has held leadership positions with many organizations over the years, including serving as founding Secretary of the National Renewable Cooperative Organization, Director and Vice Chairman of the Board of the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center, and Director and Chairman of the Board of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce. He has served on Southern Maryland Workforce Investment Board, the board of the College of Southern Maryland, and the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond (Baltimore Branch).
He has long been active in Rotary, previously serving as a member of three different Rotary Clubs during his four-decade career: the clubs in Leonardtown, MD; Belhaven, NC; and Charlotte Hall, MD.
