Community Service
Service Goals and Objectives: “Community Service” is Rotary’s outreach and involvement in the broader community. The goals of the Community Service Committee are to foster interaction between the Club and the surrounding community through the effective completion of service projects; a community improvement made possible by bringing people together, and the creation of a positive reflection on Rotary within the community. The objective of Community Service is that Rotary be viewed as a positive force in our community, strengthening and growing our membership, so as to add to our ability to serve others.
Current Projects:
· United Way – Day of Caring Our Committee coordinates Shepherdstown Rotary volunteers to assist the United Way (and 1,100 volunteers from other agencies & organizations) in completing needed community projects on a single day. Weeds are removed, trees were trimmed, buildings are organized, cleaned and painted.
· Our Town Project - This one time effort is designed to assist the SBA, Visitors Center, business partners, and the cultural community in showcasing Shepherdstown. By coordinating marketing activities during the last week of CATF season, we hope to bring additional revenues to businesses and gain greater exposure for our cultural community with visitors.
· Charity Ball - Each year the Shepherdstown Rotary endeavors to raise financial contributions for non-profit organizations and charitable causes. This is accomplished by hosting an evening of dancing, food & beverage, and an auction with proceeds benefiting these charitable groups.
· Spring & Fall Road Cleanup - For almost 25 years now, the Rotary Club of Shepherdstown has been responsible for road clean-up crews. Twice each year our volunteers meet to collect trash & other debris from a nearby two miles stretch of roadway, making our area beautiful, healthy and well-groomed.
· Potato Project - Hunger is addressed each year when Rotary teams up with the greater community & Shepherd University to provide much-needed food for hungry families. Donated foods, which would otherwise be discarded, are brought to our town for re-packing and distribution to food-banks, soups kitchens, shelters and church pantries.
Community Service Description:
The Community Service Committee provides leadership and interaction between Rotarians and the broader community (local citizens and organizations) in order to improve life, participate in common purpose programs, activities, and opportunities, or to provide aid. The well-being of our local community by groups and individual members allows us to develop strong community support and involvement by publicly demonstrating our Service Above Self mindset. It also fosters better community friendship and goodwill.
