Dictionaries for Local School Children
In recent years, the Shepherdstown and Charles Town Rotary clubs have teamed up to give free dictionaries to all third grade students in the nine elementary schools in Jefferson County. Each book is inscribed with the child’s name. In 2006, Shepherdstown Rotary also donated 100 dictionaries to the Literacy Volunteers of the Eastern Panhandle, who provide free, individual tutoring in basic reading, writing and English as a Second Language to adults in Berkeley, Morgan, and Jefferson Counties. The Club also donated 250 dictionaries to the Rotary Club of Hinton, W.Va., which distributed them to third graders in Summers County.
